Ashley Salas is a portrait and lifestyle photographer. She photographs families, seniors, children, and everything in between! Her love for capturing the military community is apparent in her work! Ashley’s fun and bubbily personality makes her clients at ease during a photo session! Her husband is in the Air Force and they have two children together. The Salas family is currently stationed at Langley, AFB in Hampton Virginia. They are ready for their next adventure this year!
When did you start your business & what made you decide this career path? I started in 2015 when we were stationed at Fort Meade. I was always interested in it, but became friends with an amazing Photographer, Danna Stumberg, who did our family photos and mentored me! She left her camera at my house by accident after a hang out and told me to practice. Her one big rule was to never take it off manual mode and to learn the camera! So I did!
Where have you lived and what has been your favorite base so far? We have been fortunate enough to stay on the East Coast. I always wanted to keep our family close to PA because of both my husband and my family. We were first at Wright Patt AFB in Ohio, then Fort Meade, MD, now Langley in VA. My husband recently volunteered for a job at Fort Belvoir and got it. We move March of this year. It’s only 2 hours from home! Honestly, I can’t pick a favorite. All of them hold a special place in my heart. My children were both born in Ohio but we have had so many great experiences and made lifelong friends at them all! I will say the beach being near us here at Langley is a huge bonus!
What is the biggest challenge of being a military spouse and pursuing your career? I’d say moving around and having to establish yourself again! But luckily this lifestyle brings you so many people!
What are your other hobbies? I love road tripping and cooking/baking! Does going to Target and binging TV shows count too!? haha!
What are some benefits of being a military spouse as a business owner? You meet SO many people in this community… and advertisement by word of mouth is a big perk. Also, I’m an outgoing person by nature, so this business AND being a military spouse has given me the chance to make so many great friendships with my clients, from all over the world!
If you could, what advice would you give yourself when you first started your business? Focus on your goals, stay true to your passion, don’t overwork!
See more of Ashley’s work!
