They are currently in Tucson at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base and will soon to head to Valdosta at Moody Air Force Base in Georgia.
When did you start your business & what made you decide this career path? I really started my business after our wedding. I taught myself calligraphy and had a lot of requests for wedding signs and envelope calligraphy. I really consider my business being started two years ago when I launched my first website and really honed in on what I offered. I initially started this path as a creative outlet from teaching 4th grade, however when my husband was selected to go to UPT after being a B-52 WSO, I decided to also go back to school for graphic design which allowed me to add branding and web design services to wedding pros which has allowed me to scale my business and continue to work for myself!
Where have you lived and what has been your favorite base so far? This one is hard. I have truly loved every base for different reasons. We love the mountains and all the things to do here at Davis-Monthan but I think Shreveport Barksdale will always have my heart. I met some of my best friends, bought our first house, and started our married life during out time there and the city, while small, was such a treasure once you got plugged in!
What is the biggest challenge of being a military spouse and pursuing your career? The constant moving. Being in the wedding industry it’s hard to not rely on local networking to build a brand. We’ve been in three (soon to be 4) states in 2.5 years which has made the start up of this business all that much more difficult with not having the plugged in community aspect.
What are your other hobbies? Drinking wine! Kidding (kind of) but truly my husband and I love finding small breweries and coffee shops to hangout in. I’m also starting to get back into my love of reading and am a huge movie junky!
What are some benefits of being a military spouse as a business owner? I think the Air Force community can be your biggest cheerleaders. Finding your group at each base has been huge for me in terms of support and love and positive affirmations!
If you could, what advice would you give yourself when you first started your business? Stop giving a shit (sorry for the language!) about what other people think about your business! Show up authentically, post your work, and don’t worry what everyone is thinking!
