When did you start your business & what made you decide this career path? I began my journey as a travel agent with Simply Enchanted Travel in January 2015.  I actually have been a nurse for over 19 years but knew that there was something else out there for me.  I’ve had the opportunity to do lots of traveling throughout my life (U.S., studied abroad in France for 5 months in college, France, England, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Switzerland, Turkey, Czech Republic, Spain, Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia, etc.) and it has really become a passion for me and my family.   After an amazing trip my husband and I took for our honeymoon I knew that I had to get in the travel business.

Here’s the story of that trip and how it affected me… My trip was booked. I was all set to honeymoon in Hawaii. At the time, I was living in North Dakota and nothing sounded better than lounging next to crystal blue waters with a warm breeze blowing and a pina colada in hand. But then I got an oil change. And everything changed!I was flipping through a National Geographic while I was at the service center and came across an article about Botswana. It was fascinating but I put down the magazine when I was done with the article. And then I sat there. Thinking. Thinking about my bucket list. I went home, told my husband we were going to Africa and cancelled our trip to Hawaii!It was the best decision I ever made {okay, it was ONE of the best}. The experience far surpassed all my expectations. The wildlife was abundant. The landscapes were dramatic and breathtaking. The people were friendly and welcomed us warmly. The lodging was luxurious, yet perfectly suited to the surrounding wilderness. Every component of the trip, seamless. Honestly, I never thought my top bucket list adventure could be so perfect. And that awesome trip is why I’m here, doing what I do…

Where have you lived and what has been your favorite base so far? I’ve been lucky to have lived in many places.  Before I met my husband I lived in Florida, Alabama, Colorado, California, Georgia, and Virginia.  Once I met my husband and joined the Air Force community, we lived in Louisiana, North Dakota, back to Louisiana, and now Montana.  Montana has definitely been our favorite location and is a possible contender for our life after retirement from the Air Force.  We love the low key lifestyle, the people, and the amazing scenery and activities that Montana has to offer.

What is the biggest challenge of being a military spouse and pursuing your career? Luckily, I am able to work as a travel consultant from home which means my clients are all over the country, some even out of the country.  In the travel industry, a brick and mortar building is no longer a necessity which makes this a perfect career.  I do find that since we are not locals I have to work even harder to make my presence known in the community.  That’s one of the reasons I’m a part of our local Chamber of Commerce- to spread the word about who I am and what I do.

Some of what Heather does in her travel planning-

Tailor-made Itineraries  {think luxury meets adventure}

African Safaris

Adventure Travel {U.S. or international}

Family Adventures  {don’t be afraid to travel with little ones!}

Ocean, River & Expedition Cruises

Disney Destinations

Universal Vacations

What are your Hobbies? As a family we definitely enjoy getting out and exploring by hiking, camping, and boating.  I also enjoy reading, baking, playing with my 5 year old son,  and, of course, traveling and planning our own vacations!

What are some benefits of being a military spouse as a business owner? Community is definitely the biggest benefit of being a military spouse.  In my business, referrals from previous clients are gold.  So there’s the added benefit of moving to new bases-  my military clients from my previous base stick with me because they know how valuable my services are to them and they continue to work with me, even when we go our separate ways.  So, as I move from place to place, my military clientele grows.  Also, being a military spouse means that I’m familiar with the military lingo, military travel discounts and benefits, deployments/TDYs, etc. and my military clients find this to be of comfort.  We speak the same language which means they trust me to take care of them.

If you could, what advice would you give yourself when you first started your business? Be confident in the value you bring to others.  Do not underestimate the value of marketing myself and my services.
