Danielle creates watch band designs that are mainly Disney inspired. Mady on Main Street is a new business that began in September of 2020! When the Disney parks were closed, she always had the feeling of “missing the magic” because they are a big Disney Family. A friend of hers owns a Disney Inspired Small Shop and one day she was just like, “I can do this.” So she did. Danielle’s husband is in the Army and they are currently stationed at Fort Knox, in Kentucky.
Where have you lived and what has been your favorite base so far? Fort Benning, GA – Fort Campbell, KY – Fort Benning, GA – Fort Carson, CO – Redstone Arsenal, AL – West Point, NY – Fort Bliss, TX – Fort Leavenworth, KS – JBLM, WA – Fort Knox, KY – we arrived in August 2020 and leave this May. What is the biggest challenge of being a military spouse and pursuing your career? Being a military spouse can be exhausting. There are so many benefits of being in the military but the reality is your spouse is gone a lot. When you’re juggling the kids, their activities & school requirements, doing all the cooking, cleaning, taxiing, trying to manage your friendships, taking care of yourself x y & z it can feel like you’re losing yourself and your identity. Before you know it the deployment is over, another year has passed and you never got to that first deployment hobby you swore you would get to this time. And now it’s time to PCS again. HA! Having a traditional career never felt like it was in the cards for me.
What are your other hobbies? I LOVE working out. I workout 5-6 days a week. Friends and I have each other as “activity buddies” on our watches and we encourage each other daily to stay active and healthy. I love to travel, read books, watch Bravo and I look forward to Family movie nights each weekend.
What are some benefits of being a military spouse as a business owner? A huge benefit to owning a small business is that it’s mobile and can PCS with you! I’ve met so many other brilliant small business owners who are military spouses and have the same story as me: impossible to have a career when you are moving every year.
If you could, what advice would you give yourself when you first started your business? Oh I would most tell myself to BE PATIENT & SLOW DOWN. Unrealistic expectations are never a good idea when you are starting a small business. It’s okay to turn off the machines at 8pm and get a good nights sleep. I recently gave myself boundaries with the business – I shut down on Friday nights and all day Saturday for Shabbat and Family time. It’s done a wonder for my morale.
