Meet Jess Mastorakos: Author

Jess is a military spouse, mom of four little ones, and a talented author. She has published ten fiction novels and another eight planned this year! Her novels have something in common… they are all romantic love stories. The men in her books are also all in the military. No one better to write a good military love story than someone living it! Her husband is in the Marine Corps and they are currently in Kailua, Hawaii.

“It’s all about discovering your unique strengths and talents, and then optimizing those things in order to be the most successful.”

-Jess Mastorakos

WHEN DID YOU START YOUR BUSINESS & WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE THIS CAREER PATH? I’ve always wanted to be an author and I’ve been writing creatively for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t have the knowledge or confidence to do it as a career until 2019.
WHERE HAVE YOU LIVED AND WHICH WAS HAS BEEN YOUR FAVORITE BASE? We were stationed at MCAS Miramar for about five years and loved that, then we went to Lancaster, Pennsylvania on recruiting duty. Our favorite so far has definitely been Hawaii, where we are now.
WHAT IS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE OF BEING A MILITARY SPOUSE AND PURSUING YOUR CAREER?  Actually, I love that my career is flexible enough to move wherever the military sends us! Also, since I write sweet romance novels about Marines finding love with strong women, being a military spouse is actually a big part of my writing life.
What are your other hobbies?  Well, I love to read. But I don’t really have time for much else between momming our four kids 7-and-under, homeschooling the oldest two, and writing my books. Unless walking the dog while listening to podcasts counts, because I love to do that. Oh, and in the winter, I watch enough Hallmark Christmas movies to qualify as a hobby.

What are some benefits of being a military spouse as a business owner? Since my books are military romance, I’ve loved being able to share my stories with military spouses like myself. I started writing these in the first place because I wanted more fiction that showed what our love stories are really like. It’s not always suspenseful or involving war, sometimes it’s just about navigating the unique challenges involved in being in a military relationship. Plus, there’s a big theme of friendship across my series because I feel like the friends you make in the military become family very quickly, and that’s fun to highlight. So, these things are benefits of being a military spouse and a business owner in that I’m grateful to have a career where I get to shine a positive light on military relationships and also break some stigmas along the way.

If you could, what advice would you give yourself when you first started your business? I’m very big into the Clifton Strengths Assessment, so I would tell myself to take the test and start learning about my strengths right from the beginning. It’s all about discovering your unique strengths and talents, and then optimizing those things in order to be the most successful. Learning my strengths and then using them in my career has made me 500 times more productive and keeps me from doing things “the wrong way” for how my own brain works. Everyone is different! I remember I used to force myself to create a detailed plot and story bible for each book and then it was terribly boring trying to actually write the book. I then learned (through the Strengths stuff) that not everyone needs to plot, and my brain works better if I write into the dark and see where the story takes me. It’s a lot of fun and I recommend it to anyone trying to be successful in any industry!
