-Brittany Boccher

When did you start your business & what made you decide this career path? After years of struggling with employment I realized I could develop my own career that would provide flexibility in scheduling and the opportunity to move no matter where the military sent us. It was in 2017 that I realized military spouse identify was a problem and I took my passion of serving others and developed a solution. I identified the needs of a community and developed the Discovering Your Spark program as a way to meet those needs

Where have you lived and what has been your favorite base so far? We have lived in Texas, Mississippi, Colorado, California, and Arkansas. Our favorite duty assignment was Colorado Springs, CO. We absolutely loved the community and the beautiful views of the mountains. Most of our fondest memories come from our time stationed at Peterson Air Force Base.

What is the biggest challenge of being a military spouse and pursuing your career? I believe the biggest challenge is securing employment with the opportunity of advancement. I can only speak for myself and experienced the challenge of not being with a company long enough to grow and advancement. Each time I made it close to advancement it was once again time to move and relocate to another area. During my time of securing employment organizations were less likely to offer remote work opportunities. Today, largely due to Covid-19, organizations have learned and realized that remote work is a viable option and I hope through the challenge of this pandemic our military spouse community will find new opportunities to work remotely for companies that were not available to them just a year ago.

What are your other hobbies? I love photography and having the ability to explore my environment and capture moments in time. I also love music and sharing a cup of coffee with friends!

What are some benefits of being a military spouse as a business owner? I find it rewarding to be a military spouse small business owner. I have the ability to mentor and share my experiences with fellow spouses to help them develop their own career path that meets their goals and passions while accommodating the military lifestyle.

If you could, what advice would you give yourself when you first started your business? Take your time and do your research. You don’t want to recreate a wheel that already exists! I also believe in taking the leap even if you don’t feel your business is at 100%. Sometimes it takes getting started, taking action, to know what you business needs to grow!

Any future plans or dreams for your business? Discovering Your Spark has grown over the past four years and I’m currently working to expand my scope to include not only military spouses but those spouses of veterans, first responders, and caregivers!
