Charlotte loves cooking food from her childhood, it makes her happy and she loves to create new recipes inspired by bold Texas flavors! Cooking is her passion and she loves to help others feel more confident in the kitchen. Charlotte is a monthly featured chef for ABC4’s Good Things Utah. She has been cooking on TV for years and its been a dream! Her husband is in the Air Force Reserves and they are currently stationed at Hill Air Force Base near Layton, UT
When did you start your business & what made you decide this career path? I have been cooking my whole life and my talent has grown over time. I grew up in Texas and when I moved away, the thing I missed the most (besides my family) was the food. Cooking recipes that reminded me of home kept me connected to my roots. My passion for cooking ignited about 3 years ago when I realized it was an expression of creativity and a stress reliever. I got the opportunity to cook on live TV and my excitement for teaching others to cook and sharing my passion took off. I started my blog, “Charlotte Shares” shortly after my first television segment. I have now filmed over 30 live TV cooking segments with ABC4’s Good Things Utah and KSL’s Studio 5. I am leaving my elementary career at the end of this school year to pursue full-time blogging and I could not be happier!
Where have you lived and what has been your favorite base so far? Our very first base when my husband was active duty was Lackland AFB in San Antonio. It was my favorite because it took me back to Texas. We loved it there so much! After that we were stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio and Kirkland AFB in Albuquerque, New Mexico. We came back to Utah after that because my husband separated from active duty to pursue a civillian career. He joined the AF Reserves shortly after.
What is the biggest challenge of being a military spouse and pursuing your career? The biggest challenge for me has been the capacity to keep going during deployments. Since I started my career, we have been through two overseas deployments and it was hard to juggle everything. I am a mom of three teenagers and they still need me as much as they did when they were toddlers! Ha!
What are your other hobbies? I love to hike the Utah mountains that are just a few minutes from my home. I love to travel and have missed it over the last year. I also love trying new restaurants and exploring new cuisines.
What are some benefits of being a military spouse as a business owner? For me, the benefit is having current and former military friends all over the country who are following my blog and making my recipes. It has helped me grow my food blog even faster!
If you could, what advice would you give yourself when you first started your business? I would have told myself to learn as much as I could about the technical side of having a blog from the start. I would have also told myself to go all in two years ago instead of continuing my teaching because food blogging can be a lucrative career and not just a hobby. I would have told myself to never compare myself negatively to others in my industry. I am just as capable and worthy!
Any future plans or dreams for your business? I hope to grow my blog by triple the amount of current monthly viewers by May 2022. I also would love to teach more in-person cooking classes. I was starting to grow that side of my business when the world fell apart in 2020. I would also love the chance to be on Food Network (again) someday. I hope to still be sharing recipes and teaching others my passion for food until I’m old and gray! Contact info Links
