Serving as an agent and owner of District Real Estate Pros is a dream come true for Nicole. It enables her to tap into all of her guiding principles: leadership, service, commitment, hard work, family, dedication, patriotism, and new beginnings. Her husband is in the United States Navy and they are currently located in Virginia Beach, VA.
When did you start your business & what made you decide this career path? I decided to get into Real Estate in 2012. I was in a new mom group called Stroller Strides and I was friends with someone who was an agent. I needed to be able to be flexible with my schedule since my husband was gone all the time and we had a new baby at home. I love working with people and being of service and Real Estate has allowed me to have all of the flexibility I need. We have 2 children (13 year old boy & 6 year old girl) now and they are very busy with school, sports, dance, horseback riding….being able to schedule clients around all of this has been essential.
Where have you lived and what has been your favorite base so far? I am from a very small town in Oklahoma and we moved to Virginia Beach. We have been here my husband’s entire career. My husband, however, was gone for 2 years in Japan and is currently stationed on a ship in Jacksonville, FL. The ship was commissioned and due to be stationed locally, however that changed and we had just opened a business with our partners. Our children are established in their lives and my husband is in and out all the time. We made the choice as a family to have us remain in Virginia Beach and my husband is finishing out his sea duty in FL. He has been gone for a year and a half. He will be done in about another year.
What is the biggest challenge of being a military spouse and pursuing your career? Time is always the biggest challenge. There is one of me and the myth of having it all is just that, a myth. There are always sacrifices. I surround myself with a strong support system and have a great team. Even with that, you are the one who is running a business, a household, being a present mother and keeping your husband encouraged and supported. It isn’t easy. It is worth it.
What are your other hobbies? I am a proud plant mama. I happen to have 3 dogs, a chinchilla and an impressive aquarium, so I would say I am a lover of animals. I really love football, especially college football (Go OU), believe it or not I am a reader and a bird enthusiast.
What are some benefits of being a military spouse as a business owner? I’m relatable to so many people, especially in our area. We are a very heavily military populated area. I know what it is like to do the deployments, and moving, and the strain & stress of all that military life can entail. I also know that not every season & situation in life can be happy & joyful all the time. I tend to take on the hard sells and am able to navigate & support people as they make large financial decisions during times of loss & grief or stress & strain.
If you could, what advice would you give yourself when you first started your business? Honestly I would tell myself to chill the F out, it’s all going to be ok. I would tell myself to go ahead and go for it. The worst that can happen is it doesn’t work out and you move on to something else. You don’t stop moving forward. Being in business for yourself, even with partners, is not for the faint of heart. You will work longer & harder than you ever thought possible, but the rewards make it all worth it. I get to be a part of changing lives.
Any future plans or dreams for your business? Everything I do is for our family. It has been all about my husband and his retirement. He has sacrificed and missed out on so much. He is due to retire soon and I want to be in a position where he can come home and do whatever he wants to do. If he wants to take a year off, start a Home Inspection business, or play video games for a year…whatever he wants to do I want him to do it. I know that my partners and I want to see where our business takes us and those along for the ride. At the end of the day it is always all about family. Our families, our agents’ families, our clients’ families. We are in the people business and real estate is what we use to do that.
